Using Pinterest for Educational Purposes

Pinterest is one of the fastest-growing social media networks. Its rapidly-expanding user database is projected to triple in the next few years. Pinterest is unique because it combines different aspects of other sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to create a new, exciting experience for the social media user.

On Pinterest, after creating your profile, you begin by creating a list of topics you are interested in, like fashion, arts and crafts, and even education. Your home page will then be full of articles, pictures, and links regarding those topics. You can “pin” them to one of your “boards” to save for later, and for other users who follow you to look at and “repin” to their own boards.

Utilizing resources on Pinterest is an advantage to educators who use this site. Methods of teaching are becoming more diverse with each new link shared. Here are some facts about using Pinterest for educational purposes:

  • Users spend twice as much time on it as on Facebook
  • Pinterest is 80% more viral than Twitter (source: WhiteGloveSocialMedia.com)
  • Visuals are beneficial for active learning
  • Pictures, videos, and links to sites help to engage all methods of teaching/learning
  • You can create group projects/classroom assignments on Pinterest, comment on other students’ work, and provide open collaboration for projects outside the classroom (source: BBCActive.com)
