What You Need to Know About the ISEE Test

How often may a student take the ISEE test?

Students may register to take the ISEE up to three times in a 12-month admission cycle, once in any or all of three testing seasons. The seasons are Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March), and Spring/Summer (April–July). ISEE does not encourage multiple testing, but we do offer students and families that option.

For which grades is the ISEE available?

With the recent addition of the ISEE Primary for entrance to grades 2-4, the ISEE is now available for applicants to grades 2-12.  The ISEE is available online for entrance to all grade levels, and is also available in paper/pencil for entrance to grades 5-12.

How quickly will I receive my scores?

Scores are distributed electronically to schools as early as the Monday after a Saturday exam. Scores from paper administrations post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Scores from online administrations may post more quickly.

Can ISEE Primary be taken in a paper/pencil version?

The ISEE Primary is available exclusively in the online modality.

What is the difference between the ISEE and ISEE Online?

The ISEE and ISEE Online offer the same high standards for admission assessment. The ISEE Online modality provides schools and families even greater choices and flexibility. The only difference between taking the paper-pencil or the online ISEE test is the format of the test. Instead of writing answers on a paper answer sheet and writing the essay by hand, the student taking the online version will answer all questions using a computer and will type out the essay.

Can an applicant take the ISEE test in the paper/pencil version, and then take the online version?

Yes, students may register to take the paper-pencil or online version of the ISEE test up to three times in a 12-month admission cycle, once in any or all of three testing seasons. The seasons are Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March), and Spring/Summer (April–July). The ISEE test does not encourage multiple testing, but we do offer students and families that option.
