A word or two about the college essay

Ah, the angst of writing the college essay. Sometimes the most accomplished students forgo applying to a college they’re interested in attending because they don’t want to write another essay. Because of the increased number of applications (one-quarter of the fall 2009 freshmen submitted seven or more applications according to the report), the essay is carrying more weight in admissions decisions because it gives admissions staff additional insight into the character of the student. In 2009, twenty-six percent of the colleges said the essay was of “considerable importance” compared to fourteen percent in 1993. And the more selective the school, the more important the essay becomes in the admissions process.
