Individual Attention Makes a Difference

Hi again, it’s Renee, the new intern at Boston Tutoring Services who previously wrote about having Chemistry trouble. I failed my first exam of the semester. Up until this point, I had never failed an exam in my entire academic career. Although I went to every class, and took notes diligently, there was something missing. I knew that, unlike my classmates, I wasn’t going to learn the material by simply sitting in class and listening to the lecture. I had to seek out extra help.

After class, I pulled my professor aside and asked if I could meet with him before the next exam. We scheduled two 1-hour sessions. After the first session, I was feeling more confident. After the second session, I was starting to do some of the equations on my own. By the time of the exam, I wasn’t feeling the same hopelessness I had felt when he passed out the first exam. I pulled out my calculator and worked through the equations with more confidence.

College is different from middle or high school. Parents are not there to notice that their child is struggling with certain materials. They aren’t there when their child comes home with a poor exam grade. I had to accept the fact that I wasn’t grasping the material, and sought out help myself. Because I never properly learned Chemistry in high school, my foundation for learning wasn’t up to par with my classmates. Had I received help early on, I wouldn’t be having so much trouble at this stage in my academic career.

Boston Tutoring Services offers K-12 Academic Subject Tutoring. These 1-hour sessions are one-on-one, similar to the extra help I received from my professor. In as little as two private sessions with him, I was able to better grasp the material and start doing some of the equations without assistance. My test score went up about forty points. It is important to address any academic shortcomings early on, so that your child doesn’t need to resort to last-minute cram sessions. Even though I was able to raise my score, I know that I might continue to need additional support in this subject. Depending on your child’s range of needs, Academic Subject Tutoring packages range from 5 to 20 private sessions. Getting them the support they need will build confidence and skills that will last a lifetime.
