Nature’s Classroom

One of my favorite memories from elementary school was the week long trip I took to Nature’s Classroom in Ocean Park, Maine. For those who have not heard of it, Nature’s Classroom is an outdoor learning facility that offers residential programs for schools and large groups in the New England area. During the time spent here, student get to learn about a variety of topics through hands on experience in nature. I fondly remember dissecting a rat, building a structurally sound bridge out of rope, learning how to identify animal tracks, examining owl pellets and much more.

At Nature’s Classroom the learning happens everywhere. During mealtimes, everyone has a designated job. Some people set the tables, others bring out the food, or clean up after meal time is done. During the day students participate in a variety of activities with their Field Groups. These activities can be in math, science, humanities or social studies. There is something for everyone. Sample activities include Flight & Aerodynamics, Chemistry of Soap, Broadcast Writing, Fruit Dissection, and Music Composition.

The experience of spending the week surrounded by so many amazing adventures in nature is one that will stick with me forever. Not only did it increase my knowledge, it also was fun and helped me grow as a person. For more information about Nature’s Classroom please click here.
