Keep Your Kid Busy this Summer in Needham

In our Summer Reading Series for 2019, we will be featuring the summer reading programs of public libraries in different towns from all over Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Let’s take a look at the Needham Free Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, A Universe of Stories.

Race in Outer Space. Each elementary school in Needham is represented by a rocket on the bulletin board in the Children’s Room. Each rocket is on its way to the same distant planet, moving a little bit closer each week as children record their time spent reading. Which rocket will arrive first and win the race? It’s all up to you. The more you read, the faster and further your school’s rocket will travel.

Who Can Blast Off with Us? Children ages 4-10. Children read or are read aloud to; audio books count. Minutes spent reading or listening are recorded in a reading log. Log 16 hours between June 24th and August 9th to complete. All children will receive a free book just by signing up. Every child who logs 16 hours will receive a free book and one free ticket to a Brockton Rox or PawSox Game. Children who log more than 16 hours will receive a free kid’s meal at Chipotle and have their names entered to win a Grand Prize through a random drawing. Those who read the most will be entered into the Bruins drawing.

The Countdown Begins. Fly over to the Needham Children’s Department to sign up from May 1st through July 29th . Starting on June 24th – August 9th, log time spent reading to be eligible for grand prizes, which may include a general admission ticket to the Big E, a Kindle eReader, passes to Tree Top Adventures Zip Lines, gift certificates to Bowlaway, and a pass to the Eric Carl Picture Book Museum. Attend events from June 24th to August 12th.

Read and Bead. Get a reading brag tag and neck chain when you sign up. As you log your reading, receive 4 beads for every 2 hours of reading. The more you read, the more specialized beads you can collect to put on your neck chain.

STEAM Your Way to Space. The STEAM Powered Creation Station will be open all summer for Children ages 6-12. Control a BB 8 robot. Explore robotics, computer coding, electricity and engineering.
