SAT Test Prep

SAT Test Prep Provides Students with Confidence and Test-Taking Strategies to Make the Most of Their Abilities

As the test date for the March SAT approaches, students may experience some crippling pre-test jitters. As a college sophomore, I no longer have to worry about the dreaded SAT. This is a real weight off my shoulders, because when I was in high school, I fretted before the test, during, and after. My mother could tell you how crazy I drove her with my constant checking of the mailbox for my scores. I, like many other students, took the SAT multiple times, in the hopes that my scores would improve. Much to my dismay, the numbers barely budged, and I was left with no choice but to send my less than ideal scores to universities.

I spoke with Alexis Demopoulos, a college sophomore, about her similar experiences with taking the SAT.

“I took the SAT three times, about a month apart each time, and not much changed with my scores,” Alexis said. “They were like single digits apart from each other.”

Though her performance overall met the national average, she said she struggled most with the math section on the test.

“My performance on the SAT definitely held me back,” Alexis said. “I realized that during my college applications process. My high school advisor said my scores were the number one reason I got rejected by certain colleges.”

Victoria McConnell, another college sophomore, said she thought she had done all she could in her preparations for the test.

“I read all the SAT test prep books and studied with friends beforehand, but I still had a hard time with the test, which is weird because I usually test really well,” she said.

Like Alexis, Victoria took the test more than once, with only incremental changes in her scores.

“My score went up a bit when I took it the second time, but after that I kind of just said, ‘Okay, this is as good as it’s going to get.’ I still got into a good university, but I don’t think my SAT scores really helped me out.”

As you can see, test prep is crucial, not just for optimizing your scores, but also for relinquishing some of your doubts and anxiety, and providing the confidence to perform to the best of your abilities. If I were to receive these resources in high school, I think my experience with taking the SAT would have been much less worrisome. Perhaps with the right amount of confidence, my scores would have better reflected the diligent student that I am.
