Need Help Teaching Your Child to Read?

Need help teaching your child to read?

In my work teaching pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade, I come across so many parents who report that reading with their child is a nightly battle. Every parent wants to know how they can support their child and make learning to read fun. I am excited to announce that I will now be offering a tutoring service in which I demonstrate the process of teaching your child to read, and also leave you with a detailed plan so you can continue the work once I leave.

When children are learning to read, the most important skills they need to master are rhyming, letter-sound relationships, decoding (being able to recognize that the letter makes a specific sound), and blending (putting together the individual sounds to read the word). Step-by-step, we can incorporate each of these skills in a fun and hands-on way. I will take your child through a tutoring lesson, incorporating all these skills, and explain to you every step of the way what is being instructed and how to continue these skills with your child on your own. I am providing a sample curriculum below:

Activities with Rhyming: Rhyming is an important early skill, because it provides phonological awareness (awareness of the sound structure of words). We will start by generating some rhymes and reading a rhyming book, and I will leave you with some samples.

Rhyming Objects and Tile Letters: Using rhyming objects and tile letters, I will show you how to teach your child about letter-sound relationships, initial sounds (first sound in the word), medial vowel sounds (middle vowel sound), final sounds, decoding, and blending.

Sandpaper Letters: This Montessori School staple helps children gain a tactile relationship with the letter shape, because it is multi-sensory. I will show you how you can make this at home.

Interactive Reading of Decodable Book: We will read a book with decodable text (this means that each letter in each word makes its typical sound), and I will show you how to continue this practice at home.

In this personalized service, I will work with you and your child in your home or local library to guide you through the process of how children learn to read. Whether your child is ahead or behind the above curriculum, there is always room for you to learn how to improve their skills at home through fun and hands-on activities. At the end of our session, I will leave you with a personalized sample curriculum to use after our session is completed.
