Best Study Tips For School

.Being a senior in college this year means I’ve been a student for going on seventeen years now–that’s most of my life! By this point I think I’ve gotten the hang of studying, so here are my best study tips for school.
- Take detailed notes
This step is important to implement all the time, even before you need to study for a certain test. Whenever you’re in class, make sure you’re paying attention and writing down the important stuff. Color-coding your notes might also make things easier and more interesting for you.
- Write things down on paper
Studies show that writing things down with a pen or pencil helps you remember better than typing them on a computer does. Consider closing your laptop when taking notes, or at the very least going over your typed notes later and jotting down some important terms by hand.
- Stay organized
When you’re sitting down to study, the last thing you want is to have to dig through a big pile of papers just to find what you need. Consider getting a different folder for each class you’re taking to make finding assignments a breeze.
- Use a planner
Using a day planner or agenda book may seem old-fashioned, but marking down the due dates of important assignments or tests will make sure you don’t forget to study. To digitalize this step, consider entering schoolwork into a phone calendar or app to help you keep track.
- Make flashcards
Making flashcards is a tried and true method of study for a reason. They’re great for vocabulary words or short facts you need to remember, and they work for any subject of study. If this seems too old school for you, I encourage you to look into resources like StudyBlue or Quizlet, which you can use to make digital flashcards on your computer.
- Utilize apps
There are many fantastic apps out there for studying–use them! One of my favorites is DuoLingo, which has games to help you learn languages. This app can help you study Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Hebrew and more. StudyBlue and Quizlet also have highly-rated apps available for your phone. Make technology work for you as you prepare for your next test.
- Ready, Set…Study!
Find a quiet space and make sure you have everything you need in front of you to minimize distractions. This can be the hardest part, but following these tips will make it easier for you to do well. Happy studying!
