.During the holidays, it can be challenging for parents of children with special needs to find events that will accommodate their needs while still being fun and festive. To make the search easier, we have compiled a list of holiday events for special needs children ranging from Santa visits to sensory friendly plays. Read below to find out about events near you!
Scituate, MA
December 11th, 2016
Reservations required
At 12:30 pm there will be one “reservation-only” train car for children with special needs and their families. This car will be a more relaxed setting and children will be entertained with a reading of the “Polar Express” and will be treated to snacks, holiday songs, a surprise “first gift” from Santa.
2.Sensory Friendly Performance of “Mary Poppins”
Gardner, MA
December 3rd, 2016 at 2pm
This sensory friendly performance of the classic play, Mary Poppins will feature quieter music and dim lights during the entire performance. There will also be designated “quiet areas” to the side, however, children in the audience may talk and move around as they please during the performance.

3.Sensory Friendly Performance of “Honk”
Emerson College, Boston
December 10th, 2016
Free
Much like the performance of Mary Poppins, “Honk” will feature dim lights, lower volume sounds, and a “chill space” to accommodate children with sensory sensitivities.

Registration required
Across several cities in Massachusetts, malls will open 2 hours earlier to allow children with special needs and their families to have a sensory-friendly visit and photo session with Santa in a more relaxed environment. Click here to view the list of participating malls.
