.Keeping up with the app landscape is not easy! New apps are made all the time, and it can be difficult to sort out which ones will actually help your child learn. There are many great-looking apps that aren’t designed well for learning, while others may not look great at first, but upon closer inspection are wonderful for learning. All of these science learning apps are designed for expanding your child’s knowledge and skill set, and they are well worth your time.
Cosmic-Watch by Celestial Dynamics AG: Cosmic-Watch is the world’s first and most advanced interactive 3D astronomical time device in the digital age. It features an interactive astral chart you can use to explore planets and constellations, a time travel feature you can use to explore any planetary positions in the past, present, and future, and much more. Students will enjoy this interactive learning tool as it helps them understand the concept of the celestial sphere and the apparent movement of the sky.
Science Bear by Alain Dadaian: This app will help middle school students review basic concepts from physical science. It contains more than 200 comprehensive questions as well as links to dozens of videos perfect for further learning. Students can test their knowledge on motion, forces, density, solids, liquids, gases, astronomy, atoms, periodic table, chemistry, and more! Great for reviewing for state tests.
Speed Bones Lite by Benoit Essiambre: This game is a must have for students tackling human anatomy. It is more captivating than flashcards and the practice mode allows students to learn specific regions without needing to complete all the previous levels! The review mode feature also lets you replay any mistakes you may have made in the previous game to facilitate learning. This app is best suited for high school students but could easily be adapted for middle school by utilizing practice mode.
Science 4 Kids by Nth Fusion LLC: Science 4 Kids is designed to improve science skills of any students in grades 3-5. The lessons in this app promote learning of science concepts associated with plants, animals, human body systems, and recycling. It is well suited both for classroom use and for practicing at home.
Cosmolander – Missions in the Solar System by Marshmallow Games: This app is aimed at children ages 6 and over who love space and astronomy, and is also perfect for anyone who longs to explore outside of our planet! Science Detective by The Critical Thinking Co: This game has won many awards for teaching standards-based science as it develops higher-order reading and critical thinking skills. Science Detective prepares students for more advanced science courses and new assessments that measure reasoning, reading comprehension, and writing in science. Students cannot merely scan the stories in this app for answers—they must carefully analyze and synthesize the information from the text, charts, tables, and graphs to explain and support their answers.
