.December is almost upon us, and there are an abundance of fun activities for families to enjoy in the Boston area this year. Check out our list of holiday activities and events happening around Boston in December 2022. Happy holidays!
Boston Common Tree Lighting 2022
When: Thurs 12/01/2022, 6:00PM-8:00PM
Where: Boston Common, Boston, MA

Cost: free
The City of Boston’s signature holiday celebration returns. The official holiday season kick-off in Boston includes the lighting of the City of Boston’s official Christmas tree and trees throughout Boston Common and the Public Garden. The holiday lights throughout both parks will light up in sequence shortly before 8 p.m. when Mayor Wu is joined onstage by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman. The show will close with a pyrotechnic display by Atlas PyroVision.
Boston Pops Holiday Pops Kids Matinees
When: 12/03, 12/10, 12/11, 12/17, 12/18, and 12/24/2022 (times vary)
Where: Symphony Hall, Boston, MA

Continuing one of Boston’s most beloved holiday activities, Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops open the 2022 Boston Pops Holiday Series on December 3, kicking off a season that runs through December 24. Kids’ Matinee performances are geared toward younger children and are shorter in length (70 minutes), with no intermission, plus an opportunity for post-concert treats and a visit with Santa. In 2022, the Holiday Pops Kids Matinees take place on December 3 at 10:30am (Sensory Friendly) & 3:00pm and December,10, 11, 17, 18, & 24th at 11:00am. These special family concerts include a children’s sing-along and photos with Santa.
The Nutcracker – Sudbury

Under the direction on James Kennerley, the Billboard chart-topping Choir of Saint Paul’s presents ‘Christmas in Harvard Square’ on December 11, and December 18, at 3pm at St. Paul’s in Harvard Square. Make this your annual Christmas tradition with gorgeous choral music, audience sing-a-longs, a cameo by our youngest choristers, and many glorious sounds of the season.
The Muppet Christmas Carol

The classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge as told by everyone’s favorite band of Muppets! ‘Tis the season for love, laughter, and one of the most cherished stories of all time. Join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and all the hilarious Muppets in this merry, magical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. Academy Award winner Michael Caine gives a performance that’s anything but ‘bah, humbug!’ as greedy, penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge.
Winter Solstice Lantern Walk

Join us for our annual winter solstice celebration! When you arrive, you’ll start welcoming winter by making upcycled tin can lanterns. At dusk we’ll light the lanterns and embark on a guided walk along the trails that will include presented passages from the story, “The Shortest Day,” by Wendy Pfeffer. After our hike, we’ll gather back in the orchard to warm up by a campfire and enjoy hot drinks, cookies, and s’mores as we welcome the new season under the stars.
