Caroline says, “I love math, and I enjoy helping students develop the skills and confidence necessary so that they too can love math. I started tutoring when my own kids were young and needed math help. Eventually I became a certified math teacher in Arizona and now in NH. Math can be frustrating for students; math skills ‘build’ as students progress. Consequently, I strive to constantly review important concepts from earlier years as applied to current assignments. I have found that the best way to explain all of this math is to relate it to activities each child enjoys. For example, if a teen loves baseball, maybe we can learn about quadratic equations by analyzing the motion of a ball in air. I also like to ask a lot of questions, such as ‘What comes next?’ when solving math problems with students, otherwise it’s easy to lose focus in the midst of a problem! In all cases, I hope to help students realize that once you ‘get it’ (the math), it really is pretty fun.
