He is a native French speaker, and is also fluent in German. During his time at Yale, he served as the Tournament Director/President at the New Haven Urban Debate League.
Jacob says: “I like to ask questions. I strongly believe that the lessons that really stick come from asking your own questions, not from passively receiving information. I am passionate about math education specifically because I find the subject beautiful and I wish to correct the great wrong that has been done in traditional schooling. Students see math as a set of arbitrary rules to memorize, when it’s really the incredibly creative process of asking questions about an imaginary world, seeing how that world pushes back, and trying to work around that. I will always ground students in the why – why we care about a certain problem, why we do things a certain way – and the fantastic stories behind the math they learn. I love to ask questions about more than just math; I question students’ logic when I coach debate, I question people in my volunteer work as an EMT and hotline counselor, and I even question recipes – I love to cook! I’m also a huge jazz guy, budding Red Sox fan (I just moved to Boston) and I love plants.“
