Lyla tutors students in grades 5-12 in Math, English Language Arts, History, Biology, and Spanish at all levels. She prepares students for standardized tests, including the SSAT, ISEE, SAT, ACT, and AP tests. She has studied abroad in Ecuador, teaching elementary school students in a Montessori style. She is experienced in working with students with ADD and emotional needs, as well as students for whom English is not their first language. She also has a specific interest in restorative justice and non-profit work. She enjoys developing personalized materials to meet the specific needs of her students.
Lyla says, “Hi! It’s lovely to meet you. I’ve been tutoring for over three years, and when I’m not tutoring, I’m working as a youth restorative justice mediator. The mediation shapes and strengthens my tutoring, and vice versa! I grew up in Vermont, and the East Coast will always be home – even college in Southern California couldn’t pull me away. I love challenging myself with my learning (ask me why I wrote my philosophy thesis on Derrida!) but my academic journey has not always been smooth – I’ve had accommodations for various health struggles, and I feel really strongly about making education as accessible as possible. I’m a past Napier Initiative for Creative Change Fellow and National Association of Community and Restorative Justice Impact Grant awardee. Reach out with any questions, and please know that I would love to work with your student!“
