Susan has been teaching for over 45 years, specializing in English Language Arts, particularly in writing across subjects areas, including History and the Humanities. She supports students in grades 4-12 as well as adult learners. She has extensive experience working with students for whom English is not their first language, as well as students with a wide range of learning styles and needs. She previously served as the Head of the English Department within the Newton Public Schools and as an ESL Instructional Specialist/SEI teacher within the Somerville Public Schools, in addition to many other positions. She is also a visual artist who exhibits in major Boston-area shows, in addition to writing press releases and presentation materials for art exhibitions.
Susan says: “I can see their faces and hear their voices even now – those teachers whose influence determined and continually guides my own work as teacher and tutor to this day. It’s not any particular explanation of grammatical structures I recall or lessons on essay writing. It’s the patience in each teacher’s approach, the kindness that preceded every correction, that made learning not only possible but a life-long practice for me. Beyond advanced academic degrees and extensive classroom and other teaching experiences, this is what I bring to each session and student: mutually active involvement and engagement in the practice of learning itself where the acquisition of individualized skills and strategies truly begins.“
