Staying Motivated In School

Staying Motivated In School

When schools first start in the fall, students are eager to learn, and happily come to class, armed with new school supplies. As the year goes on however, staying motivated in school can become a challenge. Use the following tips to help keep your student motivated throughout the entire year!

    • Set goals: A frequent cause for lack of motivation in the classroom is due to the fact that there is nothing to strive for. By setting goals, students will feel as though they have something to prove. Not wanting to disappoint, they are more likely to work hard and remain motivated throughout the school year. Goals can range from getting straight A’s during the semester, to reading 5 books in 1 month. The goal itself is not what is most important, but rather the feeling of accomplishment and pride once they are achieved.
    • Challenge them: By engaging in activities which are challenging, students will constantly be competing against themselves, and will always have something to do, which will discourage boredom. One challenge that can be set forth is an Advanced Placement course. A class at an accelerated pace such as this will keep students on their toes, and willing to work hard in order to achieve the goals previously mentioned.
    • Have Discussions:  When lack of motivation sets in, there is usually a reason for it. Finding what the reason is can be the key to restoring motivation. If you notice a significant lack of motivation and enthusiasm, sit down to talk about what has changed and how to respark motivation.
    • Take Breaks: Motivation’s arch enemy is stress. The more stress, the less motivation and progress. So if you notice the student becoming stressed, suggest a break from schoolwork for a few minutes. These breaks can be spent going outside for a short walk, some quality time with a pet, or even watching an educational and inspiring TED Talk. This will allow time to recharge and once they resume the activity, they will be more eager and attentive.
    • Acknowledge and Reward Accomplishments: We all enjoy recognition for hard work, so it is important to reward students when goals are met or they excel at challenges. This reward does not need to be something extravagant; a simple “Congratulations,” will serve as a reward. Whatever the reward may be, this feeling of accomplishment will increase confidence and further motivate the student to meet their goals.
